I know some of you have expressed your dislike for self checkout, but let me add some perspective just for kicks. I did something absolutely terrible, I went to WalMart on a Saturday. The checkout lines were as you would expect, a train wreck. But I still went to self checkout. Here's why. If I go thru a cashier line there are 4 things that almost always happen before I can't finally check out.

  1. The person in front of me somehow manages to find three items with no pricing. That's three phone calls to three departments to get a price. (estimated time, 7 minutes)

  2. The person in front of me is feeling neglected so they attempt to begin a personal relationship with the cashier. (estimated time, another 7 minutes)

  3. When they finally get around to paying there is always a problem with their method of paying. The chip in their card doesn't work so they have to swipe the card 567 times until it finally goes thru. (estimated time, another 7 minutes)

  4. after they pay, they take time to put all their cards away. Explain to the cashier that they always have this problem, gather up purses and bags, take almost forever to finally start putting their stuff in their cart and again take almost forever to get the cart loaded and move away from the checkout counter. (estimated time, another 7 minutes)

  5. I then put my 2 things on the counter, have my card ready, swipe, get my receipt and exit all within 82 seconds.

  6. I can't remember, did I mention that I really like self checkout?
